DR. JOSEPH MERCOLA on GMOs, Food Revolution Summit

Second speaker for the Food Revolution Summit, second day: Dr. Joseph Mercola cotinuing on GMOs.
Ocean Robbins: Welcome to The Food Revolution Summit where we explore how you can heal your body and your world with food. This is Ocean Robbins and I am joined by my dad, John Robbins in welcoming our guest, Dr. Joseph Mercola.  Dr. Mercola is a 1982 graduate of the Chicago College of Osteopathic medicine and a former Chairman of Family Medicine at St. Alexius Medical Center.  He is the author of many books including two New York Times best sellers. Some of his recent books include Take Control of Your Health and Dr. Mercola’s Total Health Cookbook and Program.  Dr. Mercola is founder of one of the most heavily trafficked health websites on the internet, He was voted the 2009 Ultimate Wellness Game Changer by the Huffington Post and has been featured in hundreds of magazine and television appearances including Time, Forbes, The Today Show, CNN, ABC, World News Tonight, The Dr. Oz Show and many more.

My dad and I feel honored to have the pleasure of welcoming you onto this call.  Here to interview you is my dad, John Robbins.
John Robbins: Thank you Ocean.  I join Ocean, Joe, in welcoming you to our summit. I have always felt, and I think you probably do to, that a physician who doesn’t know about nutrition is like a fireman who doesn’t know about water.  Yet the average MD today in four years of medical school receives only about two and a half hours in course work in nutrition. What would you say has happened to the practice of medicine in this country?
Dr. Mercola:    Well that is a pretty broad question. I am not quite sure where you want me to go with that because there are a lot of different ways that one can address that.  It has certainly been a rapidly declining path, I believe, primarily because of the influence of the corruption between many areas of the Federal Regulatory Agencies and these large corporations. So as a result there are systems set up that really are somewhat limiting to individuals achieving health through traditional and ancient time honored methods of doing so, which is primarily with choosing the right foods and staying clear of many toxic influences. So it is a big challenge.
John Robbins:  One of the types of genetically modified crops that are very prevalent today is Bt corn and Bt cotton which produce pesticides in every cell of the plant. This has an advantage in the short term for the farmer because it kills or deters insects, but the plants themselves become living pesticide factories. They are toxic and not just to the insects. In India, farmers who let their sheep graze on Bt cotton plants after the harvest saw thousands of sheep inexplicably die.  Are you as disturbed as I am by the growth of genetically engineered food in our culture?
Dr. Mercola:   Well, I don’t know your level of disturbance but it is certainly one of the major challenges I have with the system.  It is even worse than you mentioned in India. It is bad enough that you have the sheep dying. I am not sure if you are aware that there are a quarter of a million Indian farmers who have committed suicide as a result of their involvement with genetically engineered foods over there.  It is just a travesty of what they are doing. It is shocking that it is allowed to happen but it is exactly what it is. Monsanto gets in there.  They have these propaganda campaigns and they convince these local farmers to use their seeds.  Then they get them essentially committed to this process which eventually bankrupts them.  They don’t have any resources left.  They have no option; at least they perceive no option, other than to commit suicide.  It is pervasive over there.
John Robbins:  It is a human tragedy isn’t it?
Dr. Mercola:    Absolutely, of the highest magnitude. It is like genocide almost.
John Robbins: Yes. What do we need to do to awaken American consumers to the disturbing, frightening realities of GMOs?
Dr. Mercola:    First of all I would like not to use the term GMO because it is somewhat of a bland term and it doesn’t really express the extent of the distortion that is occurring.  We like to use the term genetically engineered because it helps people understand exactly what is going on at a deeper basis.  It makes it more clear and easy to object to that. But the basic process is to educate individuals and to let them be aware of this and this is one of the things we do on a regular basis.  I think collectively, even if you had everyone in the country become aware of this, there is not really a solution until you can identify which foods are genetically engineered.  So that is why we are so excited about this California ballet initiative because it could be the beginning of the end for them. That is why they are putting up $100 million to fight it.  They know if this thing passes it really could spell the end of genetically engineered foods in the United States. This is exactly what happened in Europe. There was no national legislation that outlawed genetically engineered foods. All they did was require labeling and one the foods were labeled it was essentially eliminated from Europe.

Dr. Mercola on MICROWAVE use:

John Robbins:  I want to ask you on another subject that I know you have written about and I think it is something that isn’t often discussed.  But for people who are food conscious and want to eat more healthfully, it is actually important; that is microwave ovens.  Do you have a sense or a perspective on their use that differs from the common understanding that they are just fine?
Dr. Mercola:    Well I have been opposed to them for…actually; I have never been in favor of them, ever.  I have just avoided them for a number of reasons. Some of them have to do with the concept of homeopathy.  I am sure you and your listeners are familiar with this vibrational medicine. The way that microwave ovens work primarily is to cause the food molecules to vibrate at certain frequencies, very high frequencies actually. I think it is in the gigahertz range.  So it essentially imparts a negative homeopathic vibration into the food or the liquid that you are heating but even beyond that, the device itself is actually quite dangerous. When you turn a microwave oven on, you will literally for a number – I think it is thirty, forty, fifty feet away from that, you need to be out of that distance because it is completely different than a cell phone or even a motor on a refrigerator which is also a very high emitter of EMF, but the EMF that comes out of a microwave oven is probably one of the most dangerous ones out there because the field is so large.  So even irrespective to the damage it does to your food, it really causes damage when that unit is on.

GMOS could be affecting our health more than we can imagine, infesting non-gmos seeds and even endangering the lives of bees who get their pollen from flowers coming from GMOs seeds.
The following is only a small part of the interview, the gist of this interesting and amazing wake up call for all of us.

Ocean Robbins:Welcome to The Food Revolution Summit where we explore how you can heal your body and your world with food. This is Ocean Robbins and I am joined by my dad John Robbins in welcoming our guest Jeffrey Smith.  International bestselling author and filmmaker Jeffery Smith is a leading spokesperson on the dangers of genetically modified organisms or GMOs.  Jeffrey is author of the world’s bestselling book on GMOs, Seeds of Deception; Exposing Industry and Government Lies about the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You Are Eating.  He has counseled world leaders from every continent, changed the course of government policies and is Executive Director of the Institute for Responsible Technology.                           Jeffrey, the work you are doing is inspiring and it is groundbreaking and maybe some would say revolutionary. We feel honored to have your voice as part of this summit and here to interview you is my dad, John Robbins.
John Robbins:  Thank you Ocean and I join Ocean, Jeffrey, in welcoming you and celebrating your work and also regretting that it is so necessary. Today Monsanto and its allies continue to fight ferociously every attempt to require labeling of foods made from genetically modified seeds. They say there is no reason for the public to be concerned but many people and certainly many of our listeners are in fact deeply concerned. Do they have reason to be?
John Robbins:  Many of Monsanto’s GMO crops have been engineered to withstand massive sprayings of Roundup, the company’s proprietary herbicide. I have seen ads where Monsanto claims Roundup is biodegradable and it is safe. What is the actual environmental and health impact of Roundup?
Jeffrey Smith:  Well Monsanto got convicted of false advertising when they used to say that it was biodegradable and that was a New York Court but that didn’t stop them from saying the same thing in Europe until the French Court then nailed them and got them to pay a fine for false advertising. Roundup, it turns out, is linked not only to birth defects but cancer, endocrine disruption, smaller sperm counts, abnormal sperm and a host of other disorders. It was originally patented as a broad spectrum chelator which means it binds with nutrients and does not make them available to plants. When it is sprayed on plants it deprives those plants of nutrients making them weaker and then it promotes pathogens in the soil which kill the plant. So it creates a perfect storm of disease and death. The largest proportion of the diet of livestock in the United States are Roundup Ready crops; soy, corn, cottonseed meal, canola meal, sugar beet pulp and alfalfa.  Now they are eating nutrient deficient crops and there is a universal deficiency of some nutrients now in the livestock in the US.  We eat these sick and nutrient deficient animals, we eat the nutrient deficient Roundup Ready crops and we eat the crops that have higher levels of Roundup which not only has toxicity directly to us but it can also then chelate or bind with nutrients in our body depriving us of those very, very important nutrients. Roundup is now found in air samples, rain samples, water samples, in our urine. It is found in our blood, it is found in the blood of fetuses and it is dangerous in very minute concentrations, in fact there was some recent evidence that it kills gut bacteria that is beneficial.  In fact, within cows it kills the gut bacteria that keeps down the population of botulism and so there is an upsurge supposedly of botulism now in cows and possibly also in the human population linked to the all-pervasive Roundup in our diets.
John Robbins:  As bad as Roundup is, I am seeing something worse on the horizon because as its use has been increasing it is obviously increasing herbicide tolerant weeds forcing farmers to switch to other chemicals including the acutely toxic 2,4-D.  Most of us are familiar with this as the primary ingredient in Agent Orange. It seems like something out of a bad science fiction movie but is it actually true that Dow Chemical wants to solve the problem by creating corn and soybeans that are resistant to 2, 4-D which would lead to millions of acres of US farmland being sprayed with a chemical warfare agent notorious for causing birth defects and cancer?
Jeffrey Smith: You are absolutely right John, it is stranger than fiction and this is their response to the inevitable emergence of herbicide tolerant weeds, Roundup Ready weeds have emerged on over 13 million acres in the United States.  Instead of acknowledging that this whole system is not appropriate and going back to more sustainable programs and approaches they are introducing these Agent Orange crops which are guaranteed to flood our bodies and our environment with this acutely toxic Agent Orange component. It is an example of the kind of skewed thinking and profit driven thinking of the industrial model of agriculture that completely ignores the consequences for health, environment, wildlife and future generations. Even the introduction of GMOs as you know on its own right without its associated chemicals for these herbicide tolerant crops, we are putting genes into the environment where we have no technology to fully recall them.  The genes already released become self-propagating pollution in the gene pool and can outlast the effects of global warming and nuclear waste.  On top of that they affect everyone who eats and so the exposure and the risk of GMOs to all living beings and all future generations are unprecedented in our history. 

DR. JOEL FUHRMAN: What takes to be a NUTRITARIAN, Food Revolution Summit

He studies the research and then makes the latest learning of medical science accessible to all of us.  Here to interview Dr. Joel Fuhrman is my dad John Robbins.   
John Robbins: Thank you Ocean and thank you Joel for being with us.  It’s really a privilege for us to help bring your message, your voice, your wisdom to our listeners.  I want to begin by asking you, “Was there an event in your life or a series of events that propelled you into being as passionate as you are about healthy eating?”
John Robbins: Is there a role for whole grains in your diet?
Dr. Joel Fuhrman: Well in the diet style I’m recommending, if it’s a whole natural food, certainly an intact grain is more favorable than even a whole grain that has been ground into a flour.  Certainly there’s a role for these things in a minimal amounts but the amounts that you should eat should be closer to its natural state, to its unprocessed state the more it’s a favorable food.  So that means something like black or wild rice would be a better food than rice flour.  Not merely because it’s the food but how it's been processed or ground and made to increase the hypoglycemic effect.  So when you eat an intact rice it’s a whole grain but your eating it intact you’re not grinding it all.  Same thing with wheat berries over whole wheat.  Steel cut oats over oat flour, even though it might be the same food it’s still more favorable to consume the food in the least processed form possible.  And the answer to your question is certainly we rate carbohydrates, certain carbohydrate foods based on certain criteria and that criteria would help us discern what proportion those foods would be best in the diet. 
The most favorite carbohydrates because of their fiber content, their micro-nutrient content, their resistant starch content, the lower glycemic effect, the most favorable carbohydrate might be beans.  So maybe rice wouldn’t be as favorable as beans but some rice could be included in your diet. It just wouldn’t be a rice-based diet.  Beans and cauliflower, squashes, peas and lentils would all be more favorable foods for example than even brown rice. Certainly white rice and white potato I would consider less favorable because of those factors we’re mentioning.  Resistant starch, fiber, nutrients all have high glycemic effects so we want people to make sure they have enough room in their stomach to consume the full spectrum of nutrient rich foods that they’re supposed to be eating.  Then supplant those needs with other foods that are not quite as nutrient rich but still are wholesome natural foods.
John Robbins: Well speaking of processing much of the corn or almost all of the corn and soy grown in the country today that isn’t organic is now genetically engineered.  Do you have feelings about that?
Dr. Joel Fuhrman: Well it’s kind of scary.  It’s scary what people put in their body.  With the untold potential risks down the road and the way common Americans are eating today it’s frightening.  It’s a frightening thing. I know that you feel the same way obviously, but the power of big industry like Monsanto to control so much of the seeds and promote GMO foods.  But luckily it’s still in a small segment of the total food choices and we still have availability of wholesome food. Obviously we want the people to be able to have the availability of wholesome food that’s not been chemicalized, refined or grown in a way that is potentially risky.  We want it to be affordable to people. We want to educate them about how they can control their health and not have happen to them what happens to most Americans and that’s really a life that ends in quite significant human suffering. 
So I think that by working together and having thousands or millions of people aware of this type of message, working together that’s where we have more power.  When we work as a unit and we can promote healthy living and healthy eating as a cornerstone of proven American.  Over the last 20 years things have been not going positively as people get more overweight and more diabetic, more medication.  I think we are starting to see things turn around today and we are starting to see more people aware that the health care crisis has to be addressed at its roots or its foundation and can’t be treated on top by just putting more medications on people.

DR. CALDWELL ESSELSTYN: No more Heart Attacks, Heart Attack proof. Food Revolution Summit

Dr. Esselstyn told us that among certain cultures that eat plant-based  diets, heart disease is virtually non-existent. If you live there, he commented, you'll have a more lucrative career selling pencils than being a cardiologist. During World War 2, Germany deprived the countries it occupied of livestock. From 1939 to 1945 in Norway, deaths from heart attacks and strokes plummeted. But as soon as there was a cessation of hostilities - back came the meat, back came the dairy, and back came the heart attacks and the strokes.
This is only one very small portion of the interview I thought central and powerful:
Dr. Esselstyn:   Well I think that the film is really very powerful and very enlightening because it shows that there is no snake oil or voodoo in the film. It is all really evidence based.  It is so compelling when one sees the science that can be behind making these nutritional transitions because whole food, plant based nutrition, it trumps all.  It is the absolute food cornerstone of what I feel can be the absolute seismic revolution in health, but we find ourselves right on the cusp because right now what we are doing in medicine is really sort of insane. I mean I think you mentioned earlier about the medical schools and nutrition. I think a few years ago it was disappointing that they didn’t teach nutrition. I mean quite frankly now it is at the point where it is disgraceful because let’s take for example the power of nutrition.  I will give an example.  Suppose I have a woman or man who weighs 245 pounds and they have had a heart attack but in addition to being obese they happen to be hypertensive and they are diabetic but they just absolutely get it. They just do it right and suddenly a year, a year and a half later, they now weight 155.  They are no longer obese. Their hypertension has disappeared. Their diabetes has disappeared. The risk for a heart attack or an ischemic stroke is gone.  There is not a single pill on the planet that will do this. It is all happening because of this profound nutritional lifestyle change that they have done.  You just mentioned very poignantly earlier John about all these common chronic killing diseases. It echoes back to what we were mentioning earlier in the program when we talked about how literally even at the teenage years people have coronary artery disease.  Yet the human frame is so remarkable that it will go on for several more decades doing the very best it possibly can to resist this assault until finally the assault on the vasculature gets to a point where the body can no longer protect against the development of these plaques and the rupture and of course the clinical disease but this has taken decades to develop. The same thing is true of course of what happens with hypertension. You don’t suddenly wake up as a teenager eating horribly and have hypertension.  No, you keep that up, keep that up and finally the body no longer can keep your blood pressure normal.  It starts to be elevated. The same thing is true with diabetes. Interestingly enough the same thing is true of dementia.  Why is it that at 85, 50% of Americans or Swedes has dementia?  You don’t wake up at 85 suddenly with dementia. You have worked dog gone hard all through your life to really mess up the vasculature to the brain as well as all the other beta amyloid and the tangles that occur in Alzheimer’s.  One has worked very hard to set the ground work for that to happen. It is so exciting to think that this seismic revolution, not only in health, not only will it get this nation out of debt, but it will remarkably enhance the lives of so many.

I am very excited to start presenting in this blog portions of the series of interviews to reknown authorities in the field of health, prevention and reversal sponsored by the online Food Revolution Summit. The first doctor interviewed was to Dr. Dean Ornish, M. D.

John Robbins: I want to share with our listeners’ one of my very favorite quotes of yours. I don’t know where you originally said this or wrote it but I refer to it often because I think it is so telling. You said, “I don’t understand why asking people to eat a well-balanced, vegetarian diet is considered drastic while it is medically conservative to cut people open or put them on powerful cholesterol lowering drugs for the rest of their lives.  These products are the main culprit of what is killing us. We can absolutely do better and live better lives without them.”

Dr. Dean Ornish:   I said radical, not drastic, because it is radical, radical meaning to the root of something.  So yeah, but it is so topsy turvy in that way.  We pay for things that are dangerous, invasive, expensive and largely ineffective and we have a hard time believing that these simple choices in our lives that we make each day like what we eat and how we respond to stress and how much love we give each other and how much we exercise can make such a powerful difference in how dynamic they can be.  But they really are.  That is probably our unique contribution is to use these very high tech, expensive, state-of-the-art measures working with first rate scientists to show how powerful these very simple and low tech, low cost interventions can be at a time when 3/4s of the 2.7 trillion dollars that we spend each year on health care in this country, which is really largely sick care, is for chronic diseases that can often be prevented or even reversed by simply making these same kinds of changes.  It is not like there is one diet and lifestyle intervention for heart disease and a different one for prostate cancer and a different one for Type II Diabetes and a different one for changing your genes or making your telomeres longer or whatever it happens to be.  It is really just to the degree that you move in that direction, we found there is a corresponding benefit.  It is not all or nothing.  Being a vegan is too much for some people, so you say, “Okay great.  Just do what you can.  What matters most is your overall way of living.” This whole idea of once you call foods good or bad, it is a very small step to thinking of yourself as “I am a bad person because I eat bad food so I might as well just bring out the cheeseburger at that point.”  Wait a minute.  In every one of our studies, the more people change their diet and lifestyle, the more they improved and I thought it would be the opposite.  I thought the younger people with milder disease would be more likely to show improvement but I was wrong.  It wasn’t how old or how sick they were, the more they changed, the more they improved and the better they felt which of course makes it more likely for them to keep doing it, whether it was their PSA level, their degree of prostate tumor inhibition, their telomerase, their gene expression, their degree of blockage in their coronary arteries.  Again, it was the more they changed, the more they improved.

Mad Cow California: Stop Weaning Calves on Cattle Blood  Posted: 04/25/2012 8:59 a.m.

I was still in medical training when I was called to testify in defense of Oprah Winfrey in the infamous "meat defamation" trial. If you remember, Oprah swore she would never eat another burger again after hearing that cows were being fed the remains of other cattle. After she tried to remind the audience that cows were supposed to be herbivores, the meat industry representative defended the practice by stating, "Now keep in mind, before you view the ruminant animal, the cow, as simply a vegetarian -- remember that they drink milk." The absurdity of the statement aside, it's not even entirely accurate. In modern agribusiness, humans drink the milk. Calves typically get milk "replacer."
Like all mammals, cows can produce milk only after they've had a baby. Most newborn calves in the United States are separated from their mothers within 12 hours -- many immediately after birth -- so the mother's milk can be marketed for human consumption. Though some dairy farmers still wean calves on whole milk, the majority of producers use milk replacer, which too often contains spray-dried cattle blood as a cheap source of protein.
According to the American Protein Corporation, which boasts to be the world's largest spray-dryer of blood, the chief disadvantage of blood-based milk replacer is simply its "different color." Milk replacer containing blood concentrate typically has a "chocolate brown" color, which can leave a dark residue on the bottles, buckets, and utensils used to feed the liquid. "For some producers," a company official remarked, "the difference is difficult to accept at first, since the product does not look 'like milk.'" But the "[c]alves don't care," he was quick to add.
The calves may not care, but Stanley Prusiner does. Prusiner won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery of prions, the infectious proteins that cause mad cow disease. He was quoted in the New York Times as calling the practice of feeding cattle blood to young calves "a really stupid idea," because it could complete the "cannibalistic" circuit blamed for the spread of the disease.
The European Commission also recommended against the practice of "intraspecies recycling of ruminant blood and blood products" -- the practice of suckling calves on cows' blood protein. Even excluding the fact that brain matter may pass into the trough that collects the blood once an animal's throat is slit, the Commission report concluded a decade ago that "[a]s far as ruminant blood is concerned, it is considered that the best approach to protect public health at present is to assume that it could contain low levels of infectivity." Since then, evidence that blood can be infectious has only grown, yet dairy calves in the United States are still drinking up to three cups of "red blood cell protein" concentrate every day.
Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration initially proposed to ban the feeding of blood and blood products to livestock, the agency ended up reneging on their much touted promise. Let's hope that the newly reported case of mad cow disease in a California dairy cow will renew interest in closing the loopholes in feed regulations that continue to allow the feeding of slaughterhouse waste, blood and manure to farm animals in the United States.

Cañahua: The close cousin of the Quinoa, even higher in protein

I am happy to introduce to you a cousin of the  QUINOA, the CAÑAHUA. It is little known outside of the Bolivian Andean Altiplano where it grows and harvested by indigenous peasants. Canahua is related to quinoa – its more recognized cousin – and is characterized by its high protein content and its complete amino acid profile. It is also high in magnesium.
Like its cousin quinoa it is 100 % gluten-free and as opposed to quinoa, cañahua does not have the protective saponin layer, making it easier to work as an ingredient in soups, bakery, cold salad dishes and many more.
Canahua is most frequently offered as a powder (or flour) made from the crushed, toasted grains. A versatile additive, canahua essentially is a supercharged, allergen-free supplement to mix in with smoothies, shakes, hot cereals, soups, stews, juices or for any addition of protein and for a nutritional energetic. It could also be added to flours for breads, bars, energy drinks. The grains are tiney, smaller than quinoa and dark, it is a good idea to grind them into a powder/meal and use like a flour or nutritional powder.

To prepare Cañahua hot cereal:

1 cup of Cañahua
2 cups of water
Sea salt, a pinch (optional)

On low heat, roast the cañahua in a pot stirring continously. Add the water and salt and let it cook/simmer for 10 minutes, turn off the heat and let it finish cooking in the steam for 10 more minutes.
Serve as a warm cereal, or use it later as a cold grain. You can add maple syrup or pure raw organic honey for those who are sweet tooth.

FRENCH GREEN PARTY on food: Ideas and intentions to emulate here in the USA

What it becomes important for a nation, when it comes to health, nutrition and prevention it reflects upon the minds of those who can make the change through the exercise of power. By getting informed about how other nations approach this issue, we should stop for a minute and reflect upon what was going on in France this past weekend, that precisely coincided with the celebration of EARTH DAY! It shuld be a plan worth emulating, apparently with good ideas, intentions and mainly the desire to execute the change with real deeds.

Here's a quick translation of the French Green party platform on food (the only party to have brought up the topic):

- Pre-school and kindergarten: organic meals, with a weekly vegetarian meal to change the way children see food
- More restrictions on advertising for junk food
- Promote local foods (community gardens, allotments, etc)
- Make organic food accessible to all by encouraging production and distribution and lowering value added tax on organic products
- Make fresh and healthy food more accessible to the poor - put an emphasis on fruit and vegetables in food stamps/food bank programs
- Finance nutrition research, focus on research looking at allergies and problems associated with over industralized, processed foods.

Unfortunately, they only got 2.5% of the vote.

The Mediterranean Diet Myth - Vegetables, Fruit, Naturally Low Caloric Density, Hard Physical Work, Yes! Olive Oil, Nuts, Seeds, & Chocolate? I Don't Think So!!

Those "healthy salads", should be toned down on lots of processed olive oil (that is not guaranteed its claimed virginity or purity either) and industrial quantities of nuts. Your heart will be thankful!

BREAKING NEWS: FISH OIL supplements DO NOT prevent heart disease

Fish Oil Does Not Prevent Heart Disease,

People with a history of heart problems gain no benefit from fish oil supplements, according to a new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Researchers combined data from 14 previous studies evaluating the effect of fish oil on heart disease. Based on a total of 20,485 patients, results showed that fish oil did not prevent the recurrence of heart problems. Although fish oil supplements are widely sold to heart patients, evidence fails to support their use.

Rub Me Raw: King Kale Salad

Kale for health-
Researchers can now identify more thana 456 different flavonoids in kale. With kaempferol and quercetin headint the list, kale's flavonoids combine both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits in way that gives kale a leading dietary role with respect to aboidance of chronic inflammation and oxidative stress:


King Kale Salad
2 bunches of kale, any variety sliced thin (lacinato-black kale or dwarf)
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 bunch dandelion greens, sliced thin
6 oz. mixed been sprouts (lentils and peas)
1 cup raw sauerkraut
6 oz. sunflower sprouts
1 bunch green onions, sliced
1/2 cup olive oil (for those who do not use oil, use 3 TBs of orange juice and water)*
1/2 cup ume vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)*
3 TBsp garlic minced

Raw food recipes can be complicated concoctions or easy breeaes to make. This recipe is the latter.
Mix the oil (or the orange juice), vinegar and garlic, then set aside. Toss together the other ingredients. Pour the dressing over everything and toss to mix well. Enjoy!

* My personal variation/substitution
Add-ins: raisins and roasted sunflower seeds
